EXPLANATION OF THE ACTIVITIES WITH STUDENTS

ACTIVITY DONE.

The purpose of the activity was to make students aware of the problem of food waste, to think about professions that deal with food and possible solutions for reducing food waste. Through a creative drawing technique, they express their thinking, and based on this, a poster was created, which also raises awareness among other students of our school.

TARGET GROUP.

The group of 23 participants consists of 9th grade students who attend the Brezovica Primary School near Ljubljana. There are more than 100 students in the generation, and students who want additional content in the field of career counseling are included. They are in the last grade of primary school and will continue to their chosen secondary school next school year. During this period, they are thinking intensively about enrolling in high school, so it is an ideal time to test methodologies.

DIFFICULTIES.

The methodology is basically quite extensive and demanding. However, it allows for adaptations depending on the target group, which is why we took advantage of that. The issue of food waste is very important and current, so it made sense to raise awareness and include it in thinking about a career path. The adapted methodology proved to be successful.

SUGGESTIONS.

We divided the methodology into several parts:

Part 1: Students independently research the Internet and find relevant resources on the topic of food waste. The selected resources/infographics are printed.

Part 2: We display selected quality sources of information on the board. We have prepared a miniexhibition for the students. Students look at the exhibition and discuss it in groups. They exchange opinions and experiences.

Part 3: The group focused on professions that deal with food waste. We think about solutions and air different ideas.

Part 4: Students express their ideas through creative drawing techniques. Together, we design an informative poster, which we hang in a visible place in the school.

REPORT ABOUT STUDENT’S FEEDBACKS

Students actively participated in this topic. They talked a lot about different experiences. The discussion offered many interesting clues, which we discussed more broadly and connected them to different professions. They liked the creative task because it was a little different from the others. They worked hard with their products and an interesting poster was created, which also makes other students of our school aware of the topic.
